Germany Stands Firm on Schengen Border Controls

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has defended the country's recent tightening of border controls within the Schengen Zone, citing Germany's "high magnetic effect on illegal migration worldwide." The measures, implemented three weeks ago, have drawn criticism from neighboring EU nations.

Czech Republic Calls for Schengen Principles

During Dobrindt's visit to Prague, Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan emphasized the need to return to Schengen's fundamental principle of free movement without internal border checks. The Czech government views Germany's current measures as an "exceptional situation" and has agreed to a joint evaluation in June.

Key Concerns About the Border Measures

  • 70% of surveyed German police officers say the controls are unsustainable
  • 77% oppose restrictions on leave and duty exemptions
  • 42% report working at full capacity with limited resources

French Diplomatic Intervention

France has formally questioned Germany about the legal basis for the border controls, requesting documentation to verify compliance with EU treaties. French diplomats stressed the importance of maintaining smooth border traffic while respecting European law.

The police union has warned that officers have reached their limits, with many working beyond sustainable capacity. Dobrindt acknowledged the strain but maintained that the controls are effective and being implemented intelligently through random checks at smaller crossings.
